St Nicholas' & St Luke's Church Deptford

Tracing your Ancestors at the Church.

Parish Registers

The main source of family history at the churches are the parish registers. There are registers for baptism, confirmation, the reading of banns, marriage and burial (St Nicholas only)

Baptism

Modern registers contain the date of the ceremony, name of the person being baptised, name, address and occupation of parents, the name of the godparents and the name of the presiding minister.  Earlier records may have more limited information.

St Nicholas
Registers for May 1592 till September 1930 are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.
Registers after this date are held at the parish office

St Luke's
Registers from May 1954 onwards are held at the parish office.

Christchurch

Confirmation

The details entered into confirmation records vary over time. Most record the candidates name and the date and location of the service. Some records show the age of the candidates and/or the date and place of baptism and/or a record of the candidates’ place of residence.

They also record whether a marriage was authorised by license or the reading of banns and the names of the witnesses and the presiding minister.  Earlier records may have more limited information.

Burials

St Nicholas
Registers for Nov 1563 till February 1873 are held at the London Metropolitan Archives

Few gravestones remain in St Nicholas Churchyard. Those that do are heavily weathered and rarely readable. Kent Archaeological Society have digitised a churchyard survey from the 1800's that lists the gravestones in the churchyard at that time. This is available from their website

As neither Christchurch nor St Luke's had graveyards there are no burial records for these churches.
