Parish History
The parish began with St Nicholas Church. The date of the first building is not known but we do know that there has been a church on the site for over 800 years. Over time, as Deptford grew, new churches were built and the parish boundaries of St Nicholas amended to accomodate these new buildings.
One of the churches built was Christchurch, Deptford which was constructed in 1864. It was given its own parish, carved out of the lands of St Paul's, Deptford in 1871. Christchurch was united as a single parish with St Nicholas in 1936 from when the parish became known as St Nicholas with Christchurch, Deptford. Christchurch was demolished in 1937.
St Luke's, Deptford was constructed between 1870 and 1872 and its parish created in 1873, also from land carved out of St Paul's parish. The Parishes of St Lukes and St Nicholas with Christchurch were merged in 1976 to create a single parish known, as it still is, as St Nicholas and St Luke's Deptford.
Details of the individual histories of each of the three churches that have formed our parish are available on the pages listed to the left.
For those who are tracing their family history in this parish there are details of the location and availability of the parish records on the genealogy page.
